📰 Elon Musk Reignites His Legal Battle Against OpenAI: What’s going on?
AI oil painting of Elon
⚖️ Elon Musk has reinitiated his previous lawsuit, accusing OpenAI of fraudulently inducing him to contribute $44 million.
For further reading, continue here. Article by Ashley Belanger.
Musk contends that he was coerced into funding the nascent OpenAI project in its infancy, and asserts that OpenAI's existence is largely due to his early contributions.
Elon claims Sam Altman and OpenAI had assured Musk that their technology would remain open-source, prioritize the public good, and operate as a permanent nonprofit organization.
OpenAI has pursued commercial endeavors, striking deals with various corporations, including a notable partnership with Microsoft in 2023, and remains closed-source while seeking to maximize profits.
The lawsuit seeks substantial damages for alleged fraud, misrepresentation, breach of contract, and other violations. Musk argues that OpenAI knowingly misappropriated his contributions to develop proprietary models while disregarding contractual obligations.
Additionally, Musk is challenging the relationship between OpenAI and Microsoft, urging the court to determine whether models such as GPT-4, GPT-4T, GPT-4o, and future iterations qualify as artificial general intelligence (AGI). Should this be proven, Musk argues that it would invalidate Microsoft's involvement with OpenAI.
The Motive:
The ongoing legal conflict between OpenAI and Elon Musk has reignited, following Musk's withdrawal of legal accusations a few months prior. With the departure of several co-founders, increased government scrutiny, and concerns over safety issues, Musk appears to find this an opportune moment to escalate his legal dealings with the company.

📰 Greg Brockman Announces Sabbatical as John Schulman Departs OpenAI: More Key Leadership Changes.
More People Leave OpenAI
😕 Greg Brockman, the President of OpenAI, is commencing a sabbatical, while John Schulman, a research scientist, is departing for Anthropic.
Both individuals are co-founders of OpenAI, signifying another notable transition within the company.
Recently, Peter Deng, Vice President of Product Research, along with several members of the company's safety team, also departed.
With the recent exits of these co-founders, only two founding members, Sam Altman and Wojciech Zaremba, remain at OpenAI.
John Schulman has joined the team at Anthropic, an organization established in 2021 by a cohort of former OpenAI employees.
I’m taking a sabbatical through end of year. First time to relax since co-founding OpenAI 9 years ago. The mission is far from complete; we still have a safe AGI to build.

I shared the following note with my OpenAI colleagues today:
I've made the difficult decision to leave OpenAI. This choice stems from my desire to deepen my focus on AI alignment, and to start a new chapter of my career where I can return to hands-on technical work. I've decided… x.com/i/web/status/1…

The Motive:
OpenAI has experienced considerable turnover in its workforce recently, with the competition for talent playing a pivotal role in the dynamics of the AI industry. The departure of Schulman and other key figures rips another spoke from the wheel that turns OpenAI, further weakening the foundational structure that propels OpenAI forward.
AI Breakthroughs
🥼 AI Robot Performs the World's first Dental Procedure.
AI Robot Dentist
🚀 An autonomous robot has performed the world's first procedure on a human, completing the task approximately eight times faster than a dentist.
Check out Perceptive for more information.
Developed by the Boston-based company Perceptive, the AI system employs hand-held 3D volumetric scanners to create a detailed model of the mouth, encompassing teeth, gums, and sub-surface nerves.
This innovation eliminates the need for harmful X-rays during dental visits. Instead, the AI uses Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to capture intricate mouth details.
OCT leverages light beams to generate its images and boasts a 90% accuracy rate for detecting interproximal caries.
This breakthrough promises to revolutionize dentistry. For instance, a dental crown procedure, typically lasting around two hours, was completed by the robot in just 15 minutes.
However, the AI robot has yet to receive FDA approval, so its widespread use in dental practices remains some time away.
The Motive:
A traditionally two-hour dental procedure was successfully reduced to about 15 minutes without complications. The integration of AI machines in procedural contexts is imminent, marking a significant advancement worth monitoring closely.
Additionally, there is the unease of comfort of having a machine dig around in your mouth. Although, the safety metrics will be critical as these machines become more prevalent in medical applications.
