đź¤‘ OpenAI has been considering making some considerable moves from rising subscriptions and recent corporate successes. Full article here. At reuters.com.

Summary:

  • OpenAI’s project Strawberry is set to debut at some point today, but we will have to wait on the details.

  • OpenAI has exceeded 1 million paying users for its business products: ChatGPT Enterprise, Team, and Edu.

  • Marking a substantial rise from 600,000 users in April, highlighting the successful adoption of ChatGPT for corporate use.

  • OpenAI executives are exploring higher-priced subscriptions, potentially reaching $2,000 per month, for upcoming advanced large language models like Strawberry and Orion, a substantial leap from the current $20 monthly fee for ChatGPT Plus.

  • Strawberry, one of the models under consideration for a premium tier, utilizes specialized "post-training" methods to enhance the performance of OpenAI's generative AI models for specific applications.

The Motive:

While everything may appear rosy for the AI tech giant, the cost of training their AI models is a substantial burden.

The company is set to spend nearly 4 billion this year using Microsoft servers to run workloads for ChatGPT. Sources have stated that OpenAI's software is currently running at full capacity.

CEO Sam Altman has been desperately trying to put OpenAI products into every commercial sector he can think of.

The sun might be on the horizon for OpenAI as subscribers increase and the company sees a substantial influx of commercial use. Plus, project Strawberry - the long awaited update - is being announced any day now.
However, with the current low subscription costs, will people be willing to spend a significant amount of cash each month for their larger models? Pressure mounts from other free and open AI platforms.

OpenAI may possibly squeeze their customers a little too hard, and will Strawberry or Orion be worth the cost?

📽️ YouTube creating AI protection tools for creators.

đźŽ¦ YouTube is finding a way to protect content creators from AI deepfakes and copywrite infringements. How are they going to accomplish this? For more information, visit YouTube’s official blog, here.

Summary:

  • YouTube is advancing its AI likeness management technology to protect creators' likenesses (face and voice) and provide more control over how their content is utilized in AI applications.

  • The company stated they are committed to ensuring its AI tools are designed to enhance human creativity and not replace creativity, while developing safeguards to address the emerging concerns in the AI landscape.

  • YouTube is exploring new methods, giving creators more control over how third parties might use their content for AI development. YouTube will roll out more details early next year.

  • One significant development is synthetic singing identification technology within YouTube's Content ID system, allowing automatic detection of AI-generated content mimicking their voice.

  • Additional features will enable individuals across various industries - such as creators, actors, musicians, and athletes - to detect and manage AI content that depicts their faces.

The Motive:

Using AI to fight AI? I like it. Content creators should have rights to the content they create, or AI-generated videos based on their content should be labeled and attributions paid out.
This is a major step as many companies struggle to control what their AI systems train on.
How do the creators of AI systems safeguard what trains their AI, and how do they stop it from mimicking current content?

No one has a direct answer, so blocking AI systems from artistic industries might be the right step.

📷️ Google “Ask Photos” is rolling out in U.S.

Image created in Midjourney

đźš€ Google launches another new AI feature to users in the United States through Google Labs.

Summary:

  • Powered by Google's Gemini AI model, Ask Photos allows users to search their photos using natural language queries, enabling more sophisticated and nuanced searches than previously possible.

  • Users can use a natural approach to sorting through pictures and videos. Ask for images of "me mountain biking last spring" or "my kid dressed up as a superhero."

  • The functionality goes beyond simple photo retrieval, offering insights and contextual information based on photo content, such as identifying past birthday party themes or suggesting past restaurant orders.

  • To sum it up, if you take a picture of it, your phone will remember it and can provide useful future insight.

  • The initial launch is in English and will be rolled out to all iOS users in the coming months.

The Motive:

As more innovative AI technologies emerge, the jokes are streaming in from European customers on social media.

Europeans are even beginning to take jabs at Apple’s upcoming rollout.

Helpful AI features, like more intuitive Ask Photos, will not be available for everyone and will not be for everyone.

Simple AI use cases will begin to be an integral part of tech use in many countries.

It already appears that the EU's stranglehold on AI is reaching a little too far, and there may be no one-size-fits-all approach feasible when considering rapid progress and varied perspectives on AI across different regions.
