How are U.S. Schools Preparing For AI Integration in 2024

Plus, Google Home gets Gemini and AI healthcare breakthrough

AI Riddle:

I have no beginning. I have no end. I am always coming, but also always going. I am present in all things, yet intangible.

What am I?

Today’s Motive:

  • 🏫 U.S. states approach the 2024/25 school year with AI guidelines. What is the rollout?

  • 🏡 Google announces a major AI change coming to Google Home by the end of the year.

  • 🩺 Another AI breakthrough in healthcare. This time in predictive patient care.

🎒 At least eleven states have included AI guidelines and policies within their school curriculum, with Colorado being a recent addition to the list before the new academic year.
Colorado Educational Initiative released their roadmap for AI in K-12 to plan for the future. There is a lot of rhetoric about the virtues of AI in the document, while leaving out a proper educational foundation for AI integration.

Here is a link to the full pdf and available resources, here.

  • It does hit on some hot topics like the essential understanding of important concepts like AI hallucinations, data privacy, and the potential for bias in AI. There is bias in humans as well.

  • It does hint at a few AI tools like Grammarly, Merlin AI, and ChatGPT.

  • The document does address the shortcomings of AI in an educational system, explaining emotional and cultural nuances, personal interaction and empathy with students, no peer-to-peer exchange for interpersonal development, and AI responses still require a teacher's review.

  • AI has the potential for a tailored learning experience but never details how this can come about.

    The Motive:

At the end of the pdf, the document offers a plethora of resources for teachers and students to use outside of the curriculum, but that raises another problem. The overwhelming amount of information and tools educators can manage.

AI is constantly changing at a pace that is impossible to keep up with. Students are clever and will find AI techniques to take shortcuts. How will teachers deal with these oncoming issues when inundated with more and more information?

Google home iso from Midjourney

🏡 The competitive landscape to turn your house into a smart home is heating up. Amazon, Google, and Apple are all vying to get into your home, and Google just made some big announcements.

Google announced three new Gemini-powered AI products for the Google Home later this year.
Full article from Google here.

  • New camera intelligence features that generate descriptive captions for video footage for Nest cameras, natural language input for creating Google Home routines, and sophisticated enhancements to Google Assistant for Nest smart speakers and displays.

  • The new AI features will train on user data to continuously better understand and report on activities around your home. Google Home will provide descriptive summaries of what your cameras capture. For instance, instead of watching video footage, Google Home can notify you of events such as, "The kids are playing in the front yard."

  • Google states their Home App is now smarter and more intuitive. One aspect of the Google Home app was its cumbersome style of use.

  • The new Gemini-powered features are designed to operate in the cloud while maintaining Google's privacy principles.

  • Now, an AI-driven script editor enables you to write commands and routines for your home. With this feature, you can describe the automation you want. This new feature is only available for a limited time in the Google Home web app.

The Motive:

Google Home systems have been a cumbersome endeavor for most users, and with so much competition out there, Google Home is in dire need of a few tweaks.

With the new Gemini AI enhancements, it will be interesting if Google Home can balance powerful features while maintaining user accessibility and refrain from cramming too many features into one place.

  • The integration of feature selection, SEV-EB algorithm, and the HSCAttentionNet has proven to be highly effective in enhancing predictive accuracy.

  • The SEV-EB algorithm plays a pivotal role, providing stability in the feature selection process. The HSC-AttentionNet enhances predictive capabilities by capturing short-term patterns and long-term dependencies within health data.

  • An outline of the model’s process flow diagram.

  • Empirical results support the model's superiority, achieving a commendable 95% accuracy and 94% F1 score in predicting various disorders. This surpasses traditional methods.

  • Their model performs significantly superior to others.

  • By leveraging Electronic Health Records (EHR) data, the proposed model holds the potential to revolutionize diagnostic and treatment pathways.

The AI model's focus on accuracy and stability in predictions paves the way to improving healthcare strategies, leading to improved patient outcomes.

The Motive:

The integration of AI into the medical industry has been accelerating, yet this transition faces many challenges, many of which are essential for patient safety.

This study represents another AI leap forward in normalizing AI within healthcare, improved personalized care, and contributes to a growing list of breakthroughs that underscore AI's potential within this field.
