Google DeepMind Employees Say No to Military Contracts

Plus: Elon's Colossus and Momen AI app builder

AI Riddle:

I have no voice, yet I speak to you.
I tell of all things in the world that people do.
I have leaves, but I’m not a tree.
I have a spine, but I’m not a living being.
What am I?

Today’s Motive:

  • 🤯 Employees at Google DeepMind sign letter to stop military contracts that could use their AI.

  • 🖥️ Elon Musk powers-up Colossus. The world’s most powerful AI training cluster.

  • 🏗️ Momen, AI no-code app builder review.

📰 Google DeepMind Employees Rebel Against Military Contracts.

Image created in Midjourney

🔫 Around 200 employees at Google DeepMind signed a letter urging Google to drop contracts with military organizations. Full article at time.com, here.

Summary:

  • The letter escalates concerns about the use of their technology by militaries engaged in warfare, arguing such actions violate Google's own AI policies.

  • The Israeli Military uses Google Cloud services/AI for mass surveillance and targeted bombings in Gaza, and Israeli weapons firms are required to buy cloud services from Google and Amazon.

  • The letter calls upon Google to terminate military access to DeepMind technology and establish a new governance body to oversee the use of DeepMind by militaries.

  • Google's DeepMind technology has been bundled with Google Cloud software and sold to the Israel Ministry of Defense, pushing their ethical concerns.

  • DeepMind employees argue that transparency about how governments utilize AI is nearly impossible to currently determine. Are these governments using their technology to cause harm, death, or injury?

The Motive:

200 DeepMind employees signed the letter - representing 5% of DeepMind's employee base - are sticking their necks out to draw attention to ethical AI implications and warfare.

While AI systems within warfare are the next step in military intelligence, a faction of DeepMind's employees want nothing to do with it. Especially when these advanced AI systems are accelerating to heights that are currently hard to determine.

Given the rapid pace of growth, the climate for safe AI, and making AI technology companies responsible for their implications, it will be next to impossible for some AI companies to steer clear of lucrative military contracts, even when the ethical heat is cranked up.

🖥️ xAI Turns on Colossus. Setting New AI Heights.

Image created in Midjourney

⚡️ Elon Musk flipped the breaker for the world's largest AI supercomputer, "Colossus."

Summary:

  • Colossus is powered in partnership with Nvidia by a massive training cluster consisting of 100K H100 GPUs, establishing Colossus as the world's most extensive AI supercomputer.

  • Elon stated he will double the cluster's size within months to 200K (50K H200s).

  • Nvidia's H200 chip remains in high demand despite being recently outpaced by Nvidia's new Blackwell chip, announced last March, and rumors are circulating there could be a delay in Blackwell’s production.

  • The H200 features 141 gigabytes of HBM3E memory and a bandwidth of 4.8 terabytes per second, while the Blackwell chip boasts 36.2% higher capacity and 66.7% higher total bandwidth. Source Nvidia.

  • The Colossus supercomputer is located in Memphis, Tennessee, chosen for power access and rapid construction capability. The project only took 122 days from start to finish.

Here is a comparison between other GPU clusters.

The Motive:

Elon Musk and his team have rapidly constructed the world's most powerful AI training center, showcasing their capability to develop advanced tools at an unprecedented pace.

This achievement aligns with Musk's established pattern of executing ambitious projects.

xAI's Grok will now leverage this state-of-the-art training facility. For context, Google AI operates on 90,000 GPUs, while Microsoft AI utilizes 60,000. The AI landscape has evolved into a competitive race where the ability to wield superior computing power defines leadership and influence.

The coming year will reveal how Grok evolves and which players will dominate the AI field, especially as companies vie to secure Nvidia's upcoming Blackwell chips.

🛠️ With Momen, you can build custom AI apps in a simple, user-friendly fashion. Design, develop, and create apps without code. There is no need for a strong learning curve to get rolling. Check out their site.

Summary:

  • A holistic design approach, viewing a user's journey through your app visually on Momen’s design canvas. Drag and drop your design components right in a live-view canvas window.

  • Fast development with Momen's built-in UI components, templates, and modules.

  • Third Party Integrations: bring in APIs with Airtable, Zapier, and payment systems with Stripe.

  • Momen brings faster page loading times with single-page applications. Deliver sub-second time-to-interaction on initial page load.

  • Invite teammates and assign them different roles to your project. Combines the best of both RBAC and ABAC, allowing fine-grained access control down to the row and column level.

  • Pricing: Momen offers three payment plans. From a free plan to a Pro plan, and an enterprise plan for larger projects. It should be noted if you're going to integrate Stripe for payments, a Pro plan is required.

If you are starting and no payments are necessary, the basic plan should suit your needs.

It should also be noted, that the use of AI requires a token system, so there could be additional add-on payments.

The Motive:

No-code and AI dev tools have become extremely popular in a very short time. No-code platforms provide the ability to design ideas without strong learning curves assigned with coding or spending savings getting ideas developed.

While Momen offers a wide array of strong features, if you have some grand vision, you may have to chisel it down a little to fit into a no-code platform.

This goes with any no-code design tool. They offer a wide variety of cool features. Offering the ability to develop something incredible in a short window. But they can't provide everything like traditional coding can, so keep that in mind before you get started.

How does Momen stack up to other no-code app builders? Quite well.

Momen stands out with a simplified UI design and a ton of features. It does not take long to learn their systems, and their pricing is competitive with other no-code platforms. Get started on a free trail, here.
